These included the release of the Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR), a collective national effort to place patient views and perspectives at the heart of research activities, engage patients as partners, focus on patient-identified priorities and improves patient outcomesFootnote 13. The Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) is one of the 13 virtual Institutes of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Canada’s federal health research granting agency.

The Institutes promote and build upon Canada's firm foundation of research excellence, engage the research community and encourage interdisciplinary, integrative health research.

Reforms to the manner in which federal granting is conducted have been progressing, with an eye towards improving efficient, equitable and transparent release of funds under an increasingly competitive granting environment.
